  18. I've only been using a computer for a couple of years, and got my first modem
  19. only last year, so I'm sure that helpful information will be left out of my
  20. question -- I hope you can decipher it:

  22. A couple of weeks ago, I downloaded the single file, kermit.exe, wrote my own 
  23. .ini files, my own login script, my own .pif and set it up on my 486 at home.
  24. Everything has worked great.  Download efficiencies are great.  I'm happy --

  26. At work, I tried to do the same thing.  I've set up a 486-DX, connected to a
  27. Windows for Workgroups and Novell network, using a modem connected to my 
  28. com2, SHOW COMMUNICATIONS reads: Port \x2F8 IRQ3, 16550A UART FIFO 1stop-bit
  29. I'm using an Intel 14400 ext.  I'm emulating VT102 with normal key-mapping. 
  30. Kermit is in C:\KERMIT and all of the support files are in subdirectories 
  31. created by PKUNZIP.

  33. I can't get Kermit to DIAL.  It wouldn't dial from the command line the cursor 
  34. just blinks at the end of the phone number (^c exits normally).  So, I 
  35. SET CARRIER OFF and used CONNECT to type in the AT command to dial.  The modem
  36. would not acknowledge ATZ, ATH OR +++.  SHOW MODEM says that the modem is 
  37. ready.  DSR is on 
  38.     CD is off (I turned it off)
  39.     CTS is on.
  40. My AT commands echo normally to the screen, but nothing happens (It doesn't
  41. return an OK to any commands).
  42. The HANGUP command produces the message
  43.     Modem or network should have disconnected (something like that).

  45. At that point, the "14.4" light goes out on my modem (so, the modem is 
  46. connected, just not listening).

  48. Incidentally, I got the same results on two other machines on the network, 
  49. each attached to their own modems, one is a Zoom, the other a Standard.  The 
  50. other two machines react in exactly the same way.  I tried logging off of the
  51. Novell network, and I haven't even tried to work in Windows.

  53. Is there any clue in this mess, to answer why I can't get the modem to respond
  54. to kermit?
